The Snowberry Schedule a tour

Our Story

Why Lou built a home for twelve.

The Snowberry began with a simple conviction of its founder, Lou: that care is most powerful when it is genuinely personal. Not personalized on a form, but personal in practice, where the people looking after your mother actually know your mother.

Lou holds real respect for the big communities. They do remarkable things at a scale a small home never could, and for many families they are exactly the right choice. But Lou wanted to build the harder-to-scale thing: a single table, twelve chairs, and caregivers who learn a resident's whole history, not just their chart.

So The Snowberry was made deliberately small. Twelve residents. One caregiver for every five of them, day and night. One shared kitchen, with a chef who cooks from scratch and knows who will not touch a casserole. Small enough that nothing about a person gets lost.

I never set out to run a facility. I set out to lay one more place at a real table.

The house on Crawford Street

The Snowberry is a real house in a quiet Denison neighborhood, at 4318 W Crawford St, in the Denison and Sherman corridor of Grayson County, north of Dallas. It has a living room with a good window, a sitting room for naps and visits, a dining room with one long table, a kitchen that smells like dinner, and a backyard with raised beds, a pergola and a footbridge to the fountain. Every resident has a private bedroom of their own. You can walk through it in 3D before you ever visit.

The sprig on our door is a snowberry: a hardy, unshowy native shrub whose white berries stay on the branch long after the leaves have gone. It seemed right for a home built around people who have weathered a great deal and still have a season or two of sweetness in them.

Clinical rigor, residential scale

A small home is not a smaller version of a large one. It is a different thing, the way a family table differs from a cafeteria. But small does not mean casual. The Snowberry is licensed by Texas Health and Human Services as a Type A assisted living home (Facility ID #100516), provides 24/7 caregiver coverage with electronic medication records, and holds itself to standards above the state minimums. We are members of the Texas Assisted Living Association, the Texas Organization of Residential Care Homes, and AGE of Central Texas.

Who runs the home today

Chris Casto leads The Snowberry day to day as Executive Director. When you call, you reach Chris or a caregiver who was with your parent that morning, not a front desk. Families tell us that direct line matters more than they expected, especially in the first weeks.

The people who send families our way

Hospital discharge planners, social workers, physicians, placement advisors, hospice teams and the larger communities in our area are partners, not competitors. We are one ecosystem caring for the same families, and we are grateful for every referral. If you work with families in Grayson County and would like to see the home, come for a visit. Refer in a single call; we make placement decisions within 48 hours.

If you are a family wondering whether a small home is right for your parent, read what families ask first, and then walk through, take a cup of coffee, and stay an hour.
